I am so sick and tired of my neck issues!! I have been going to Physical Therapy twice a day for going on 3 weeks. I do feel better but not great. To top it off, this morning before PT my ring and index finger tips on both hands are numb and if I extend my neck back to look up, I get tingly shock like feelings going down my limbs and backside. What is up with that??? Here's hoping it is just part of the neck issue and will go away soon.

A week ago yesterday, I woke to a pull and then pop in my neck. Not a good think when you have Degenerative diisc Disease and have a metal plate and 8 screws in the neck. It bothered me that day and with every day since, it just got worse and worse to the point where I had severe pain in my neck going up into my head. Early Wednesday morning I ended up in the ER in severe pain. Luckily the plate and screws were still in place but I somehow managed to severely pull the muscles in my neck. It is amazing how much you do with those muscles. I have been off work this past week due to the pain and the fact I couldnt hold my head up which is kind of a problem when you work on a computer all day. I have a wonderful and concerned boss who has been patient with me and allowed me to be gone. In all of this I have had 2 quilts to complete which have both had alot of applqueing. Luckily the NY quilt was finished but the Dodger one was still requiring a ton of work. My sweet mother took over it and finished the appliqueing and sewed it for me so I would be able to make my deadline. Now I just need to get it to my quilter!!

Here is the latest quilt I have been working on. I have to say it took me the longest since each of the NY logos were machine appliqued. All 32 of them!!! I hope the lucky person I made this for loves it.

NEW YEAR

I found this saying on a blog I follow and it is my new montra for 2012. I LOVE it and it is so true. As i approach a new year, i hesitate to make "goals" because i am horrible at keeping them but I feel like I need to so i am calling them "Plans" for the new year and since we all know the saying that a goal/ plan not written is only a wish, here are a few of my "plans" for the new year.

1-Be Happy! Shouldnt be that hard but this is a daily struggle.
2- Be creative!
3- Be healthy! Notice I didnt say lose x amount of weight. That just goes without saying. My oldest brother this past year has done such an amazing job of getting healthy. He is lean, mean, and a hottie. I can't believe I just said that about my brother. Oh well, its true.
4- Be more spiritual! I guess by this, I just want to be more focused in what I believe and read and study the scriptures more and get to the Temple more than once this next year.
5-Keep a Journal! I don't have any posterity that would want to know what "mom" or "Grandma" use to do but sometimes it just feels good to write my feelings down. Thank heavens journals are private until you die. I would be so embarrassed if someone read mine.
6- Be financially fit!

I think this is a good number of "plans" for 2012. Stay tuned for progress reports!!

I LOVE having traditions. For the past several years,my family spends the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving doing gingerbread houses. This year was no different. Here are a few pictures of the fun event:

This past week I had the opportunity to take care of my little brothers kids while they went to San Diego. I got kids up and off to school and tried to keep my 3 year old shadow entertained. We did the usual chores went to a movie, played, went to Gardner Village with the other bazillion people and all slept together in one big bed. This is the 3 i spent the week with love spending time with all 19 nieces and nephews.

I LOVE these two women and am so glad they got to meet each other. I hope someday to be half the women they are and can endure my trials 1/2 as well as they do. I've never "met"( said Hello before) Sheri Dew but have read all of her books and she is Amazing!! As for Desirae, she is an amazingly talented inspirational friend just starting her trial with Breast Cancer. I have no doubt she will kick it's butt!!

I have always been a supporter of breast cancer research but until it hits someone you know and love, it just seems like another cause. A few weeks ago a good friend and young mother was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and starts chemo on wednesday. I know she will kick it's butt because of her attitude, faith and family. Lava Hot Springs

It was my turn this year to do the family outing and we went to Lava Hot Springs. Not everyone was able to make it but those that did said they had alot of fun. On our way there and back, we stopped in Tremonton and had lunch at a park. The 2 1/2 hour drive isnt bad but it helped break it up and the kids enjoyed the rest.

I was having pains in my chest last week and wasnt sure what it was so I went to the Dr last week. After a chest xray and EKG, thankfully it wasnt my heart. I guess I somehow managed to bruise my sternum. The only thing I have been doing that could have caused it was cutting out a gazillion pieces for the quilts I have been making.
Who does that???? I guess a dull blade and several layers of fabric equals alot of pain!!

On a funner note, here is what I did on Saturday with my niece. I supervised as she cut and sewed her string quilt and then I sewed the outside border on my halloween quilt.

Sad Day

It's been a sad weekend. A very dear friend died on Saturday. She leaves 21 and 17 year old daughters. It is kind of sad that losing someone so great really makes you put your life in perspective and realize how fragile every minute is. I know she is in a better place and is now free of the sickness she has had for so long. I have known her my whole life. She was only 45 and way way way too young.

I can not believe I have posted 300 times. If only I could do a better job of making this my daily journal and then I would feel good about my journal writings. Maybe someday soon.

Just a couple of things on my mind today-

1- Every July I look forward to going to girls camp and love spending time with everyone there. This last year, I was released from the Stake and I was pretty sad that I wouldnt have the opportunity to go to camp any more. I was pleasantly surprised earlier this year when I was put in the ward YW presidency. We have a small but great group of girls. I have asthma and it seems eEvery year, by the end of camp, I am wearing a mask and have had to have a priesthood blessing. The dust kills me!

This past year for our stake craft, we decorated pavers. During this past year, a few very special people went up and layed them in the amplitheater. This was in no way done for me but can I tell you how wonderful camp was this year. I was only able to go 1 day but the gravel and pavers really kept the dust down and I made it without a mask! Thank You!!!

2- The past couple of Saturday's I have used scraps and put together quilt tops. It keeps me busy and I have something to show for it when it is done. Stay tuned for a Rudolph and Halloween (not together) quilt.

3- My very best friend and her family are moving back to Utah the end of this month from New York. I am so excited to have them back here and see them more than once a year.

Dog Days of summer

What do you do when it is warm outside and you have nothing really to do. I decide to make a quilt. I swear with me, it is an illness. When I get the quilting bug, I can't stop until at least the top is finished. It actually just might be OCD.

This year we did the usual 4th of July activities.. Parade, BBQ and Fireworks. However, to mix things up, my sister rented a big water slide with a pool. The kis and grown ups alike LOVED it. A few of my nieces and nephews went up and down the slide for 7 hours. They had a blast and I believe this will be an annual event. My neck prevented me from taking a slide but it was fun to watch.

These really arent in order but I am too lazy to redo them. I went with Wendy, Faith and a friend of theirs to see Mary Poppins the braodway show and to dinner in Time Square at a really good BBQ place called Virgils.

This is the ferry we went on to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. She isnt as grand as I was thinking she would be but impressive none the less.

Well, the KING size wedding quilt top is finally done. I only had to unpick it all once so I consider that pretty good. Getting those lines to match up was the not so fun part. Now it is off to my favorite quilters Eagle Moutain Quilting to have all over squares quilted into it.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to take my mom and dad down to American Fork to my Dad's only living siblings 90th Birthday party. They had a sister Carma who died several years ago. We didnt stay too long but it was good to see Uncle Reid and his side of the family. My Dad can't see too well (damn diabetes) so as some of his nieces and nephews would come up and give him a hug, I usually had to tell him who it was. I was suprised though because he could tell who most of them were by their voices. It is so hard to see my Dad getting old!! I do have to say my uncle looks pretty good for 90 years old.

My Dad

The past few weeks has brought with it some uncertainty in our house. My dad, was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I know now that if he has to have cancer, it probably is the best kind and one that if most men live long enough will end up with it. It doesnt make the day i found out any easier. CANCER is such a scary word!! They did 12 biopsies and of the 12, 7 came back positive. They decided to make sure it hadnt gone into his bones or anywhere else so they did a complete body scan and bone scan which thankfully both came back clean. Since he is 77 and has diabetes, he really isnt a strong canidate for surgery so they are going to do radiation treatments. Not fun but at least the prognosis is good.

It has been really neat to see my older brothers offer to go with my mom and dad to the Dr's and I know my mom has really appreciated it.

More bags and other stuff

My bag making has dropped off but every now and then I get requests for them. I need to write up a pattern for the crayon/pencil one because I have yet to find a pattern out there that turns out this cute. I may be a little biased.

I've also beenmaking bangles which has been alot of fun. Here is a YW one I made with all of the value colors and I added my madalions to it.

Pattern Company

I've decided not to persue my pattern Company right now so I have canceled the blog. I may do some designing for material Girls and if I do, i will keep you all posted.

I am so excited for my upcoming trip to New York in June. Since it didnt really seem like I was needed/wanted at Trek, I decided to go on my own vacation. My "3rd" sister Wendy and her family are moving back to Utah the end of the Summer so this is my last time to get to New York while they are there. I do have to say I LOVE NY!!

Some of the other things going on in my life include:

* sewing 12 skirts for Trek
* making bags
* making a king size quilt for my boss's son.

Sunflowers

I was commissioned by a friend to come up with a wall quilt for her made with country type blues and sunflowers. Not a real easy task so I came up with this design. I like the pattern and think I may make one with black prints and see how it turns out.
Now it is on to a king size quilt for my head boss's son who is getting married in July. We have decided on the pattern but she wants it in the colors of her wedding wich are royal blue, marigold, magenta, and a green. Now to put it all together and to finish drawing the pattern.

The power to be is found within- I guess I like this thought because today was kind of a self inflicted stressful day. I don't really know why but I let the constant phones get to me and the more than dang phone rang, the more tense inside I got. When I got home from work, I had to run an errand and while I was alone in the car I screamed at the top of my lungs. Have any of you done that?? Sort of makes you feel better. I also got on the treadmill. Now that made me feel even better. Here is to a great February.

I've noticed on quite a few blogs lately where people have listed a word or a phrase as their "motto" for the year. I have decided on this one-

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE

I think the reason i like this one so much and it stuck with me is because of all the things in my life I have wanted to do and for one reason or another havent. Here are a few things I am going to work on this year because it is never too late!!

1- Be Healthy- Yeah, so what if I am going to be 43 years old this year. It is never too late to have the body I have always dreamed of.

2- Be educated- again, so what if I am going to be 43 this year, doesnt mean it is too late to go back to school and get my teaching degree. I may be 80 by the time I finish but oh well!! It is never too late!

3- Be creative- Work on getting more patterns done. I can do what ever I want to do and it is never to late to be more creativly successful!

4- Be Happy with me! I've always said in my head, I'll be happy when I'm thin or married or have kids or have the perfect job or... Why wait for all those things to be happy. I can be happy with me right now because it is never too late.

Here is to a great year!!

I am so excited! I was thumbing thru The Quilter Magazine from 5/10 and found an ad for a quilting company and guess what pattern they had on the machine?? My Yo Yo Baby pattern. They must have bought a kit at Material Girls because it was even out of the same print. So fun! Here is to getting more patterns published this year.

Oh Tannenbaum!!!

When I was growing up, these are the kind of trees (maybe a little fuller) we always had and I loved them. My mother decided this year she wanted (along with the fake ones) a real tree she could put her icicles on. I think this will be an annual thing again since the house smells so nice and it is so pretty.

From the time I was little I can remember sitting at the top of the stairs Christmas morning with the rest of my siblings waiting for Dad to go down and turn on the Christmas tree lights so we could come down and see what Santa brought. As we got older, my Grandpa and Grandma Burnett would sleep over and it was always a toss up to see who was the first up; us or grandpa. Christmas was never big extravegent gifts mostly because when you have 8 kids, money has to stretch further but it has made me thankful for the homemade gifts i remember getting. I remember being excited for a new dress and hair clips, a doll and crayons and a new coloring book.

I am excited for Christmas this year because of the presents my mother has been working on for her grandkids. I can't say too much about them yet because some of you readers are my nieces and nephews and I don't want to spoil the surprise. I'll post pictures after the big day. She has been one busy Grandma.

Temple Square

A couple of days ago we went with Tyler and his family to Temple Square to see the lights. I guess I was a little disappointed because it didnt seem like they had as many lights as they usually do. maybe it is just that some of the big trees that they usually light up werent. Oh well, it was still fun.

Provo Tabernacle

This past week was a sad day for many Provo residents. An old yet very beautiful Pioneer building built in the late 1880's burnt. Last night on the news they were talking about it and showing some of the paintings that use to be in the building. The focused on this picture and said this is what it use to look like. It is the second coming picture of Jesus assending from Heaven

Here is what is left of the painting:

If you can tell, it is just the outline of Christ. I have been unable to get my mind off the picture. A coinsidence some may say but I think not.

This weekend I had the opportunity to go to Time Out for Women at the Salt Palace. It was filled with songs and inspirational messages on finding HOPE in our lives. What an AWESOME weekend.

I have a friend who asked me to make her a wall quilt and she wanted it in blue and sunflowers. Not an easy combination but I think I really like it. I found some material that had sunflowers but it also had apples and pumpkins so I ended up fussy cutting to get the right sunflowers.

Witches Oh My!!

If you've never been to Gardner Village this time of year, you are seriously missing out. Gaelynn and I decided to go to Archibalds for dinner ( 1 hour wait for 2) and then to walk around and see the witches and of course end up in one of my favorite fabric stores Pine Needles. I have never been there when it has been so crazy but fun.

Today was a great day!! Not only because it is Friday and my friend Aubrey's Birthday, but a day I found out I was getting a raise. I took a pretty big hit in the pocket book when I went from BLIC to DMBA last year and have been trying to figure out what I could do to make ends meat.

Today out of the blue our CEO told us we were getting raises to put us in line with industry standards. Now I have no idea what kind of raise it will be but even 50 cents an hour would be helpful. I would love more but am certainly not going to get my hopes up too high!.

My mother is making quilts for all the grandkids for christmas and she asked me to design this one for the son of the biggest "Y" fan I know. If you look close, they are footballs, basketballs, golf, and soccer balls. Even though they are having a losing season, his faith in "his" team never waivers. He may throw his hat at the TV and yell "come on" but he never waivers. Too bad not everyone has as much faith as he. I chalk it up to a rebuilding year and better things are to come.

So October begins my favorite time of year. The mountains are all aglow with the different colors of leaves, the apples are ripe for pickin, It's General Conference weekend, and the halloween candy is out. A couple of years ago, i went to New York to visit my bestest friend and her little family and while we were there, we went to an orchard and picked apples. It was in a little town I can't remember but if I were to live in New York, if I couldnt live in Dobbs Ferry, I would so live in this little town. So countrish!!

About 5 years ago, I started having problems with my neck hurting and began losing strength in my left arm. After an MRI, I was sent to a nuerosurgen because 3 of my cervical discs were protruding into my spinal cord. After a long time of epedural shots, nerve conduction therapy and Physical Therapy, surgery was the last resort. They went in and replaced two of the discs with donner bone and put a metal plate with 6 screws over the discs. End of story so I thought.

Fast forward to now. Same symptoms start up again. Tried the epidural in the neck which didnt help. I also find out from the nuerosurgon that the previous fusions didnt work. Meaning that they havent moved but they are being held in place with the plate. August 17th I went back in for surgery where they did the Anterior cervical discectomy with plating on the c4-5 and then put a larger plate and screws that spans my c4-7 discs.

I am currently off work and am scheduled to go back to work on September 7th but we shall see. My Dr put me off for 6 weeks and I am cleared at work for 6 weeks but I doubt I will be out that long. If anything, it would be until I go back to the DR on the 17th which would be 4 weeks.

cherry hills- 2010

This year for our family outing, we spent 3 days at Cherry Hills. Not everyone was able to make it but we had fun. On Friday after riding up on the bus to oakcrest ( 3rd time that week) to ride home with the girls as a chaperone, Maleece and I took off and headed up to play in water. It was alot of fun but unfortunately, I forgot my camera over at the water park so the only pictures you get are us lounging around after dinner at our camp site.
We had alot of bonding time just hanging out hearing about all the funny things my brothers use to do when they were younger. good times!!I am in charge of the outing next year and it will be at Lava Hot Springs.

If nothing in life is as constant as change, why doesnt it get easier?

Well, it is official,after 4 very short years, (In a couple of weeks) I will be released from one of the best callings I have ever had and I am finding it a very hard change. I know it is inevitable but it came way to soon for me. We werent suppose to say anything until stake conference but since Jean got a new calling today in our ward, it is pretty much not a secret anymore.

I have had such a wonderful time working with the Young Women of our stake and their leaders and will truly miss them.

Here is to what ever lies ahead.

Latest quilt now at the quilters. It is for a girl at work that is getting married. I am calling it a picnic quilt. One she can throw on the grass and have a picnic on. It is bordered in denim and the back is orange polka dot flannel.

The theme this year was GEMS. Girls Embracing Moral Standards. I think it was by far one of the best themes we have had because it had meaning to it.

The pictures are out of order but I can't figure out how to get them in order. Oh well.

This years Youth Camp Leaders were some of the funnest girls we have ever had. They were so willing to help out and made everyone feel a part of the group. They played a signs game which was fun to watch.
Wednesday we did our traditional trip to Echo lake. The girls and leaders had a great time.
Before we left that day, we did a service project of pavers for the amphtheater which will help cut down on the dust and dirt. Yeah!!! Each of the girls got to decorate one and then we put a sealent on it so hopefully it will stay.

It was kind of weird to have the celebrations on Saturday instead of the 4th but it was still fun. We did the usual 4th activities, Parade, BBQ, kids swim, and fireworks. The only thing not so normal about it was the cool weather. Instead of hiding from the sun at the parade and BBQ, we were looking for it. I actually wore a jacket to the fireworks. Today however, we are back in the 90's.

Youth Conference this year was fun if I do say so myself. We started the conference with a delicious breakfast made for us by our Stake Young men leaders.

Even President Cutler got in on the cooking..

After breakfast, we set out to do our service project. This year, we decided tohelp a ward in the Inter city mission which Craig and Linda Schow have been serving. We met at their church and after hearing the sweet and very moving testimonies of Elder and Sister Schow, we split the Youth into groups. We had lawns to mow, apartments to clean, and arbors to paint.

When the service project was finished, everyone went home to change and get ready to head up to our Stake Property.

There were games...(Minute to Win It was a hit)

Lynne's son and daughter came up and taught the youth how to swing dance. They all had smiles on their faces and had a blast...new friends were made!!! :)

Quite a few people know this is my favorite quote. It helps me remember that even when bad things happen in my life, I need to embrace them and "love it".

This past week I finally got in to the Neurosurgeon to see what he said about my neck since it has been hurting and my left arm has been getting weak. He said that the fusion that he did 5 years ago on the c5-6 and c6-7 discs had not "matured" as they should. Actually, one of them has fused but the the other hasn't and now the other disc above that he didn't fuse at the time now needs to be done. I kind of had a feeling this was going to be the prognosis but in a way I was in denial.

As he is reviewing the x-rays and chomping ( no lie) his gum.. he tells me that it is up to me as to when I have the surgery now or later but it is only going to get worse. I was going to try the epidural in my neck first and see how long that can prolong it but am reminded that it didnt work at all last time and am not sure I want to waste the money trying it this time.

Why couldn't this have happened last summer when I was out of work for 3 months. It looks like my summer or at least part of it will be spent laid up. I am hoping it can be done in late June, first of July when it is our slowest time at work.

Got to love my life..Come what may.. and love it , it could always be worse.

Craze

I think I've mentioned this before but when I was growing up, going to a fabric store with my mom was torture and I hated every minute. NOW- I LOVE LOVE LOVE fabric. You should see my stash...well, maybe not!

The past couple of weeks my mother has been on a headband craze. She saw it on Studio 5 and has been making all the younger girls several. Here they all are Saturday going thru one of my bags of scraps picking out fabric. Garrett was looking for "Tie" fabric. Grandma told him she would make him some ties.

Alison kept trying to get him to go with some blue and green prints and he wouldnt go for any of them until she wasnt looking...

This little one is a quilt for my great nephew Cael. He is such a cutie and 4 months old and I am just now getting it done!! Oh well, better late than never. It has navy blue minky on the back and is soooo soft.

Well, The past couple of weeks since I last blogged have been uneventful. For some reason my foot that I had surgery on last year has really been hurting so I am hoping I can go get a cortizone shot and it will feel better so I can walk. I really want to "walk" and it seems when I get motivated to exercise something happen that knocks me down.

Really I know what to do... I just have a few projects on the table and need to get them all going.. Here's what's top 5 on my to do real soon list:

1- Complete my bag orders, Oaklee, Betty, Mom, Kennali, Emma, and Cameron
2- Make my adorable great nephew Cael a quilt
3- Send my LOOONG over due quilt which is done by the way to a very cute little 9 month old in New York. Yeah, it has been done almost that long.. Here's hoping I can maybe get out there this fall too.
4-Create the 3 patterns I have drawn up .
5- Apply for a grant for school. Seriously doubt this will come to fruition at least this year since my income last year wasnt quite poverty level. Trust me, it is this year. Oh well, all good things come to those who are patient. Which although not a strong point with me, I promise, I am trying to be..

A little help...

I have a 2 year old neice that thinks it is her responsibility to help her "pappa" get back to "his" chair. If he gets up to go eat or go to the bathroom, she follows behind him with her hand on his legs sort of pushing him saying "mon pappa chair". Tonight she guided him from behind unto he turned around to sit down and then she pushed him from in front. Once he sits down, she grabs his blanket and helps him put it on.

It is one of the cutest/ sweetest things and brings tears to my eyes. She is so thoughtful and protective at such a young age and sure does love her Pappa. I was finally able to grab the camera just in the nick of time.

Easter quilt

Here is a picture of my easter quilt that i did last year. I finally had it quilted and was able to get it put up for this year. I love making quilts like this. They go together fast and if the seams don't match, OH WELL!!

I am working on a new pattern which should be done this next weekend if all goes well. It screams spring and is made with the new Rainy Days fabric from Riley Blake Designs. stay tuned!!

Here it is... The hair cut from heck! Truly what was I thinking!! I have been pretty impulsive all my life and it has never been a good thing. I took Thursday off just to play and on an impulse decided to go get my hair cut. I went to a lady at Dollar Cuts that I have gone to before but this time she did a total hack job on it. The back bottom was uneven and horrible.

I finally left there and drove down the street to a bigger salon and asked a very nice lady to please fix it. She was appalled at what the other lady had done and thought I had it done at a school. If you look closely, you can see in the back where it is uneven. Unfortuantley I will have to live with it for about 4 weeks until it grows out some.

I know, right about now you are saying to yourself, so what's the big deal? I know it is just hair and it will grow back. I am really more mad at myself for acting on my impulsiveness and walking in the salon. Trust me, the manager will hear about it snd it will be the last time I ever go in there.

Now on to nicer things...

Tomorrow is my Birthday and I can't believe I will be 42. WOW!! Oh well, I only feel like I am 30ish so that is good. Now if I can have the body of one!! working on it!!!!

A few months ago a girl at work asked me to make her father and step mom a quilt for their birthdays. She said they have a king size bed and I said sure!!! King size was not the problem, it was the piecing it took. I could have gone with a bigger pattern with less piecing but I had started this and decided I had to finish it. What a job!! It was fun but I will NEVER do one this detailed again.
